Thank you, Dr. Seckin

I first heard about Dr. Seckin in the summer of 2012. Me and my husband had been trying to conceive for over 2.5 years. We had even gone through 3 IVFs which all ended up in early miscarriages. My endometriosis was discovered during the second IVF. Here in Sweden, where I live, all my doctors had assured me that I only had small endometriomas and that the miscarriages could not have been caused by my disease. They advised me specifically not to have surgery since it would damage my ovaries. I didn’t have a lot of symptoms from the endometriosis but after 3 miscarriages, and still no answers to why all this happened when I was only 33-years-old, I didn’t trust my doctors any more.
I contacted a reputed IVF doctor in NY who referred me to Dr Seckin.

I spoke to Dr. Seckin before I came to NY and I spoke at least 10 times with Lucy and Kim at his office about different worries and questions I had. They were all very nice and answered all my questions very kindly.

Before my first visit with Dr. Seckin I was very nervous, but he was very professional and at the same time very kind and relaxed. Four days later I had my surgery. I was so nervous the night before, that I only slept a couple of hours. I had all kinds of fears. Since I am a doctor myself, I knew every little detail that could possibly go wrong. Walking to the OR in patient clothing was a surreal feeling. During my education in Sweden I had been in the OR numerous times. Beeing in there as patient was something completely different. When I lay down on the operating table, Dr. Seckin looked into my eyes, put his hands on my cheeks and smiled, as if he could read my mind. He told me that everything was going to go well. In that moment even the doctor in me felt relaxed and I really felt I was in great hands. I woke up four hours later. Dr Seckin told me that he had found advanced stage of endometriosis and he graded it stage four. He said that my Swedish doctors had been very wrong advising me not to have surgery. I went back to my hotel the same night.

The following day I had to go to the ER because of severe abdominal pain. This was on a saturday, but Dr. Seckin came to the hospital and stayed with me the whole time. It turned out that it was nothing more than gas pain, but it made all the difference that he was there. I could go back to the hotel a few hours later.

I stayed in NY for a week after the surgery and met Dr. Seckin a few days later for a check up. He called me a couple of times after that, even after I was back in Sweden.

Today I barely have any scars and I barely think about how I went through the most scary thing in my life just two months ago. I’ve worked full-time since a couple of weeks after the surgery. The greatest change after the surgery is that my heart is filled with hope of living a life without the symptoms of this horrible disease and hope of being able to have children. If my endometriosis ever does recur, I won’t hesitate to go back to Dr. Seckin. He and his staff are truly an inspiration to me.

Thanks,
Sarah
