Groundbreaking $20M Center at Cold Spring Harbor Aims to End Endometriosis!

Endometriosis is finally being taken seriously.

This week, the Seckin Endometriosis Research Center for Women’s Health officially opened it’s doors at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (CSHL) on Long Island—marking the first time a top-tier U.S. scientific institution has launched a center solely focused on endometriosis research.

CBS NEW YORK

Founded in honor of world-renowned endometriosis surgeon Prof. Dr. Tamer Seckin, the center reflects more than 35 years of his dedication—not only in the operating room but also in listening to and believing patients long dismissed by the medical system.

“Looking back, every woman I’ve treated has carried a story of pain, of being dismissed, of fighting invisible battles no one believed,” said Dr. Seckin. “This center is not just research. It’s a promise.”

Why This Matters

Endometriosis affects 1 in 10 women and adolescent girls of reproductive age. It causes severe pain, infertility, and inflammation. But it often goes undiagnosed for years—on average, 10 years from first symptoms to formal diagnosis.

Why? There’s no simple blood test or imaging scan. Diagnosis still relies on surgery. Many doctors still treat pain as psychological, prescribing birth control or painkillers without searching for the root cause.

Dr. Seckin’s Vision: From Surgery to Science

Dr. Seckin has long believed that understanding endometriosis begins at the cellular level. For years, he has emphasized early diagnosisdisease mapping, and the origin point of lesions—not just surgical removal. His Aqua Blue Contrast™ technique helped improve visualization of peritoneal lesions, especially the subtle, non-pigmented types that many surgeons miss.

This approach shaped a legacy of high-quality, life-changing care for thousands of patients. Now, that same legacy is being expanded into the research arena.

Core Goals and Future Direction

The new research center is backed by a $20 million investment—$10M from the Endometriosis Foundation of America (EndoFound) and $10M from CSHL Board Chair Marilyn Simons. Its mission:

“We want to understand the causes of endometriosis on a genetic level so that we can have earlier diagnosis and more precise, effective treatments,” said Dr. Piraye Yurttas Beim, Chair of EndoFound and Founder of Celmatix Therapeutics.

Advocacy with a Spotlight

Billy Joel and Alexis Roderick Joel helped to bring attention to this hidden epidemic. Alexis Roderick Joel recently shared her own painful journey with endometriosis during Awareness Month.

“I felt that, it was Endometriosis Awareness Month, so I just felt like I needed to use my voice,” she said in an interview with Newsday.

Her courage to speak up—echoed by thousands of women—has helped shift the public conversation. It’s no longer just about symptoms. It’s about systemic change. The center is proof of that momentum.

A Moment Long Overdue

Endometriosis has often been called the “most misdiagnosed, mismanaged, and mistreated disease” in women’s health. But now, thanks to decades of advocacy and patient stories, the science is finally catching up.

The Seckin Endometriosis Research Center is not just a new facility. It’s a shift in mindset. A call to action!
